Executed during her African years, this drawing reflects Somers' direct observation of everyday life. Rather than producing romanticised images, she created sensitive and authentic studies distinguished by expressive line, balance and restraint.

Original Congo-period works by Francine Somers remain scarce on the market and are increasingly appreciated by collectors of Belgian twentieth-century art.
